Racing Ahead with Solar Power

This is a large ground-mounted solar project designed and built by Emergent Solar Energy out of the Purdue Research Park for The Toyota Material Handling Plant in Columbus, Indiana. This project demostrates how on-site solar for advanced-manufacturing facilities can fix energy costs and help the company reach their carbon reduction and sustainability goals

The Scenario

In 2023, Emergent Solar Energy completed a 210 kW rooftop solar installation for Abel Construction, home of the Abel Motorsports Indy NXT race team. The bifacial system—mounted to a steel-reinforced roof deck—features precision-aligned racking, remote monitoring, and inverter architecture optimized for partial shading. Designed to offset approximately 90% of the facility’s energy use, the project reflects Abel’s commitment to high-performance engineering and sustainability. With a 30% Federal ITC, MACRS depreciation, and utility export tariffs, the system has a projected payback of 5.2 years and will generate 287,000 kWh annually—equivalent to offsetting 203 metric tons of CO₂, removing 45 cars from the road, or powering 26 homes per year.
